The White House disclosed the start of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.

While Vought did not specify which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.
