A devastating detonation at a law enforcement facility in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir has caused the loss of nine persons and injuries to thirty-two others, according to authority reports.
The occurrence occurred when a stockpile of seized explosive materials inadvertently exploded during processing activities.
Timeline of Events
The blast took place on Friday night at the Nowgam security post, where detonation agents taken from the Faridabad area in the northern state of Haryana were being held provisionally.
Regional police chief stated that the blast materials were pending forensic examination when a "very unfortunate" incident during handling led to their explosion at approximately 23:20 in the evening.
Police Statements
Police authorities verified that this was an "inadvertent blast" and as opposed to a militant action. "Alternative theories regarding the origin of this event is unneeded," emphasized the law enforcement head during a journalist meeting.
The police station endured severe damage from the detonation, with neighboring structures also being influenced by the strong explosion.
Impact and Casualties
Several automobiles were "engulfed in flames and turned into burned shells, with debris scattered across the location," according to police accounts.
"The power of the blast was so powerful that some body parts were recovered from close-by residences, approximately 100-200 metres away the police station," stated an official source.
Most of the casualties were security officials, along with scientific examination staff, two investigative imaging experts, and a clothing professional who was with the team.
Government Reaction
The region's Administrative Head conveyed sympathies and declared that an inquiry had been directed into the catastrophic occurrence.
"I have commissioned a probe to establish the reason of the accidental explosion. Extremely pained by the loss of precious lives due to exceptionally devastating unintentional explosion at Nowgam police station in Srinagar. My sympathies to the bereaved families. I wish for rapid recuperation of the injured," expressed the authority on online channels.
