Conservative reactions to the limited disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive black blocks prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for greater transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Release
But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—from a justice department led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet some do not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Issues Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding these files for months only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
However, overall discourse on the right was comparatively subdued following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that came before the legislative vote to pass a law mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that contained no previously unseen information.
