The Gaming Giant Recruits Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Management Transition Comes After Lukewarm Response

Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming early showing last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had shown the necessity for a distinct direction.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.

Trend of Key Acquisitions

The news mirrors a comparable action taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the full content from the president's memo:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to endure.”

With your dedication and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s the game playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the promise of a action-packed game but made clear we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the need for a more distinct identity.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the input to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its potential to our fans.

The trust in this project grows every day. To further the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the incoming Lead of the team. Following some time of talks, Ben starts with us on next week.

Ben’s guidance and expertise in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having spent the last 15 years producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in welcoming Ben next week. We are all excited to persist witnessing the evolution of the game in the weeks to ahead.

The President

Title Information and Vision

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a public demo. Then, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch states. "Face the opponents with new abilities, challenges, and tests that shift every match. Do you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The option is yours."

The game lacks an official release date or consoles, but fans can expect more updates as production progresses.
